Thank you for your service

Little children are often encouraged by adults around them to say, “thank you,” when receiving something. But what should we say when we are given something we didn’t earn, didn’t necessarily deserve, and of which we don’t even understand the full cost?

“Soldiers from the 442nd Regimental Combat Team run for cover as a German artillery shell is about to land outside the building, Apr. 4, 1945, Italy..” Densho Encyclopedia. 16 Jul 2015, 14:41 PDT.

The next time you see someone wearing a veteran’s combat cap, set an example of gratitude for the next generation: tell the veteran, “Thank you for your service.” After all, that person gave you something you didn’t earn or deserve, and of which you may never understand the full cost.
